After earning his undergraduate degree, James traveled to India to live with a family in Calcutta and work with charitable organizations. James then taught kindergarten in Los Angeles before earning his law degree from the University of Oregon, where he was a member of the law review and a Wayne Morse Fellow. Formerly a law clerk at the Oregon Court of Appeals for the Honorable Virginia L. Linder, he now practices general civil litigation in Oregon and Washington, in both state and federal courts, primarily in maritime and professional liability defense. He also serves on the board of the Propeller Club of the Columbia River.
