ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

Posted on March 15, 2018

Katie Eichner recently spoke at the 2018 ABA Mid-Year Meeting in Vancouver, B.C. on behalf of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship. As a former scholar, Katie shared her perspective on the importance of ABA support for diversity. During her many presentations to the ABA’s leadership groups, its Women’s and Minority Caucuses and at the Spirit of Excellence Luncheon, she described the positive impact of the scholarship, especially for a first-generation college student.

The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship receives more than 800 applicants each year, of those only 20 are awarded with $15,000 paid out over the recipients’ three years in law school.  To date, the ABA along with corporate, foundation and individual donors have contributed $5.2 million dollars to provide more than 350 scholarships that seek to bring about a more diverse and inclusive legal profession.

Here a are a few examples of the heartfelt admiration for Katie, after hearing how the ABA’s scholarship helped her:

“Your inspirational words at the Spirit of Excellence luncheon today were so perfect.  You creatively captured the need for as well as the value of the Legal Opportunity Scholarship.  I’m confident it will help insure future funding for worthy recipients who are just now contemplating their own journey.  Best wishes for your continued success, especially in your work with and for Native Nations.”

“Katie, let me again thank you for sharing your story and spending time with all of us in Vancouver.  You moved us and further inspired us to keep up the important work of the Legal Opportunity Scholarship.”
